DEKALB, Ill. –
Matt Hulme,
Mikhail Korkunov and
Victor Sklenka picked up two victories each as Omaha opened its two-match stay in Illinois with a 5-2 victory over Northern Illinois at the Evans Field House.
Hulme and Korkunov took tight matches at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively, after teaming up for a decisive 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Sklenka and
Todd Chen won at No. 3 doubles to clinch that point.
Hulme edged Kristopher Ortega in the only singles match to be decided in straight sets. However, both of those sets went to the wire with the Omaha senior winning 7-6, 7-6. Korkunov won by the same margin in the third set against Mikael Vollbach. Sklenka won a tiebreaker in the No. 5 position.
The Mavericks led 3-0 after Korkunov's singles victory, but the Huskies took the next two matches. Omaha eventually clinched its team win when
Alvaro Quintana won by retirement at No. 6 singles.
