For the second time this season, Omaha edged a local rival by winning the final match.
One month ago, the Mavericks beat Nebraska 4-3 in Lincoln when
Matt Hulme won at No. 1 singles.
Saturday, it was
Hugo Piles Ballester's turn. The senior topped Creighton's Shin Inoue in a third-set tiebreaker 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 4 singles to give the Mavericks a 4-3 victory over the Bluejays.
Omaha trailed 3-1 after the first three singles matches were completed at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. The Mavericks then rattled off three-set wins in the Nos. 2, 5 and 4 positions to rally past Creighton.
Little separated Omaha and the Bluejays in any match. Three of the six singles matches went to a third set, and two of those ended in a tiebreaker. The six sets in the other singles matches were also tight.
Mikhail Korkunov and Hulme opened the night with a victory at No. 1 doubles. However, the Bluejays claimed wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots to take the doubles point. They then won two of the first three singles matches to end before
Todd Chen,
Victor Sklenka and Piles pulled out their matches for Omaha.
Korkunov, who won a close match at No. 3 singles, went 2-0 on the day for the Mavericks.
"Tonight was as close as it gets," Omaha coach
Matthew Barlow said. "After starting off great in dubs, our twos and threes let their foot off the gas and Creighton came back to take the point.
"In singles, we had some freshmen guys step up and play some tough third-set tennis. That was the difference-maker. I'm very happy for Hugo Piles to get the clinch in that fashion. He was due for one."
