Omaha's intracity dual with Creighton Friday came down to three matches that went the distance.
The Bluejays claimed two of them in three sets to edge the Mavericks 5-2 at the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
Omaha (4-1) earned the doubles point when
Madison Gallegos and Ines Abisisan won an 8-6 tiebreaker in the No. 1 spot after
Keegan VanPelt and
Rachel Osborn posted a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 position.
Creighton, however, took five of the six points during singles play, getting three-set wins from Sarah Wilcox and Malvika Shukla to hand Omaha its first loss of the season. VanPelt rallied from down a set to beat Allison Wilcox 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. The Mavericks lost the first set in five of six singles matches.
"It's always a fun atmosphere playing Creighton. We've had some close matches in previous years, and this was no different," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "I felt we played some good doubles to steal that point from Creighton. Going into singles, [I'm] not sure what happened, but Creighton came out firing on all cylinders – taking a lot of first sets easily. We had to play from behind all singles matches."
Absisan was the only Maverick to win the first set of a singles match. Sarah Wilcox rebounded, however, for Creighton for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Natalie Lorentz forced a third set in her match with Shukla at No. 4 singles, but she ended up on the short side of a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 result.
"It's just tough to win with that many courts down a set and having to battle back," Summitt said. "We just need to get off to better starts in singles. Something to learn from this. We will be good going forward."
