DENVER – Omaha's assignment for its Summit League opener was about as tough as it gets.
The Mavericks faced nationally-ranked Denver on the road in its first match of the conference season. The Pioneers (4-4) swept all of the points in their 7-0 victory over the Mavericks (7-4) on Saturday.
"Denver is nationally ranked for a reason," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "They're very good, have great depth and are loaded with experience.
"Scores don't reflect how close it was within the games. We had a lot of deuce points that just didn't go our way. I think we got better as the match went on, just ran out of time. [We] hope to see them again in Omaha at the end of the year."
Denver quickly grabbed the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 1 and 3 positions. The Pioneers also grabbed every singles point, winning four matches in straight sets and two others due to retirement.
Omaha's Nos. 1 and 2 singles players,
Madison Gallegos and
Ines Absisan, had to retire in their matches due to injury. Both were down a set when their matches were halted.
