LINCOLN, Neb. – Every victory during Omaha's current winning streak has been satisfying.
This one, however, meant a little bit more.
The Mavericks topped in-state rival Nebraska 4-3 Sunday at the Dillon Tennis Center in a matchup that came down the result at No. 1 singles. Omaha veteran
Matt Hulme sent his teammates racing onto the court when he dropped a forehand volley for the final point of his 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win over Calvin Mueller.
Omaha (6-6) won four of the six singles matches to take down the Huskers.
Davis Lawley and
Todd Chen claimed straight-sets victories in the No. 2 and 5 spots, respectively, as Omaha evened the match at 3-3.
Mikhail Korkunov's 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over Roni Hietaranta at No. 3 singles gave the Mavericks their first lead of the day. Nebraska, however, pulled even when Chester Wickwire won in three sets at No. 6.
All eyes then turned to the No. 1s. Hulme held a 5-3 advantage when he served on match point. He sent Mueller's service return crosscourt then floated toward the net, where he next dropped his last winner.
Hulme turned to his teammates, watching nearby, as the ball landed. The met him in mere seconds.
"I'm so happy our guys will have this memory for a lifetime," Omaha coach Matt Barlow said. "We're starting to get comfortable and confident, and now we know we can compete with anybody.
"Big shoutout to senior
Matt Hulme. He's had a rough couple of recent matches, and he showed up today when we needed him. Love these guys and am so proud of them."
The victory was Omaha's fifth straight after a rough start to the season.
The Mavericks will open Summit League play next Sunday at North Dakota after playing a final nonconference tune-up against Montana State in Grand Forks, N.D., on Saturday.
