Omaha has already nearly reached its 2021 win total only nine matches into its 2022 season.
The Mavericks, 9-14 last year, improved to 7-2 by edging Chicago State 4-3 Friday at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center in a competition that saw five the six singles matches extended to three sets. The matchup at No. 5 singles between
Brooke Covington and CSU's Katarina Dukic went to a tiebreaker in each of their three sets.
Dukic won that match, but Omaha got victories from
Ines Absisan,
Alexia Di Giulio and
Addison Miller to clinch its win after taking the doubles point earlier. Miller was the only one to win in straight sets.
Absisan was the lone Maverick to win twice, teaming up with Osborn for a victory at No. 1 doubles.
"Another tough match for us," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "This team is pulling out some gritty wins. Last week didn't go our way in three-set matches. It was nice see things be in our favor this week.
"The energy and fight today was amazing to see. We played some of the best doubles and started strong in singles. Chicago State did not back down and really made it tough for some of our players. Credit to them for not giving up and competing until final match. [We're] looking to do it again vs. Illinois State."
