FARGO, N.D. - Omaha swimming & diving opened the 2021-22 Summit League Championships with a bang Wednesday night. The Maverick men earned a first-place title on the night, while the women claimed second and third in two other events.
After the first day of action, the Omaha women are tied for second with South Dakota, while Denver sits in first place. The Maverick men sit third behind Denver and South Dakota who claim first and second, respectively.
"What a fantastic day to start off on! The women posted a lifetime best in the 200 medley relay on the way to capturing second in the event," said head coach
Todd Samland. "The women also earned a medal in the 800 free relay, while the men were on fire taking first in their first ever race at the Summit League Championships."
The swimming finals opened with the 200 medley relay. A team of
Gracie Streblow,
Caroline Gardner,
Annika Harthoorn, and
Payton Easley swam a program record time of 1:41.22 to place second overall in the event.
The men then captured their first ever title in the 200 medley relay.
Kody Hollingsworth,
Daniel Young,
Elijah Clements, and
Owen Hoak brought home the gold for Omaha with a time of 1:27.29.
The Mavericks placed third in the women's 800 free relay.
Hailey Matthews, Easley,
Annie Leinart, and
Carina Monroe posted a tome of 7:31.69 to close the swimming events for the night.
"Our first men's diver placed eighth on the one-meter board tonight. The energy was so strong, and we were in the hunt for a medal but were just out touched. It was an outstanding performance all around for both teams on night one of the championships."
Ian Blackstock posted a score of 188.45 for eighth place in the 1M-dive for Omaha in the lone diving event of the day.
Championship action continues tomorrow morning in Fargo. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
