PEKIN, Ill. – Omaha split a pair of matches in its first twin bill of the spring season.
The Mavericks (6-2) dropped a close 4-2 decision to host Bradley early on Saturday before bouncing back to top Eastern Illinois 4-2 later in the day at Parkside Fitness.
Keegan VanPelt and
Addison Miller dominated their singles matches and teamed up for a doubles victory in the win over the Panthers. Miller didn't drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Alexia Di Giulio and
Colby Kelley clinched the doubles point for Omaha with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot against Eastern Illinois. Earlier in the day, the duo won by the same score in the opener with Bradley.
The Braves, however, earned the doubles point with a tiebreaker win in the No. 3 position. Bradley then recorded a pair of three-set victories – that finished 6-4 in the final set – to edge the Mavericks overall.
Rachel Osborn won her match at No. 3 singles in straight sets.
Ines Absisan needed three sets at No. 2.
"Long day, but great matches overall," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "We lost a tough one versus Bradley. They're a good team. We had chances in doubles and singles to close it out. We just squandered some opportunities but played good tennis."
The Mavericks moved into the lead early against Eastern Illinois. The match was later tied at 2-2 until
Brooke Covington and VanPelt closed out their matches to cap the victory over the Panthers.
"We responded really well versus Eastern," Summitt said. "The energy was great; it was contagious. We had some tough matches at the top of the lineup, but our depth again picked us up.
"We got a lot of things to work on. We are ready to bounce back next weekend."
