The Omaha Mavericks close out 2022 and ring in the new year with 5-2 victory over the St. Lawrence Saints to secure a series split.
For the second night in a row, both teams went to the locker room scoreless after the opening 20 minutes. The Mavericks had a slight edge in shots at 7-6.
Omaha started the opening 4:20 of the 2
nd period on the power play after a direct contact to the head major penalty on St. Lawrence. Sophomore forward Cam Berg fired home his fifth goal of the season from the right faceoff circle to break the scoreless tie and put the Mavericks up 1-0.
Davis Pennington and
Matt Miller registered the helpers. Two minutes later, Sophomore forward
Ty Mueller unleashed a one-timer from the same spot as Berg to extend Omaha's lead to 2-0. Pennington and Senior captain
Nolan Sullivan had the assists.
St. Lawrence would score with 4:04 left in the 2
nd period but the Mavericks would come back with a quick answer. 2:01 later,
Nolan Sullivan would turn the afterburners on and take a breakaway all the home to put Omaha up 3-1. The blueline pair of
Victor Mancini and
Jonny Tychonick tallied the assists.
St. Lawrence made a push in the third period and pulled within one with 8:08 left in regulation. Omaha weathered some Skating Saints storms nicely and were rewarded with a pair of empty net goals from
Jonny Tychonick and
Jacob Slipec. Tychonick's Maverick defensemen leading 5
th goal of the season was from 200-feet out off a faceoff win.
Freshman netminder
Simon Latkoczy stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced this evening. It's his fifth game in a row allowing two goals or less.
The Mavericks will head back to a short break before welcoming the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to town, January 13
th and 14
th.
