Mavericks Beat Peru State in Third Straight Win

OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks remain undefeated at home as they toppled Peru State 91-60 Saturday afternoon in Sapp Fieldhouse to claim their third win in a row.

This is also the second straight game that Omaha has scored 91 points and is the first time they have scored 90+ in back-to-back games since February 2017, when they took down North Dakota State and Denver on 91 and 100 points.

The Mavericks are now at 3-1 to start the season, while the Bobcats are 4-2.

Leaders For Omaha
Elena Pilakouta has yet to score less than 10 points in a game this season as she again led the team with 18 today after going 7-for-8 (.875) on field goals and 4-for-6 (.666) on free throws. She also picked up 11 rebounds, giving her the first double-double for any Maverick this season.

Kennedi Grant (17 points) and Ana Nikulochkina (12) were right behind Pilakouta in scoring, as each went 4-for-6 from behind the arc to lead the team in three-pointers. Grant also had the most assists (6) and blocks (1) on the team today.

Grace Cave had the most steals of any Maverick this season with six on the day; a new career high.

Leaders for Peru State
Samantha Stewart led all players with 22 points, going 8-for-18 (.444) on field goals. She also led the Bobcats with three steals. Maddy Duncan was second on the team with 12 points after going a team-best 3-for-7 (.429) from three. Her seven rebounds were also the most on the team.

Team Stats
The Mavericks had Peru State beat in virtually every major category, besting them in field goals (31-for-70 vs. 20-for-66), 3-PT FGs (11-for-29 vs. 6-for-14), and free throws (18-for-23 vs. 14-for-21). Omaha also held the advantage in rebounds (52 vs. 36), steals (13 vs. 10), points in the paint (38 vs. 20), and points off turnovers (23 vs. 15).

Inside the First Quarter
Through the first three minutes of period one, things were relatively close as the Mavericks held a slim 10-8 lead. That would soon change, however, as Omaha would go on a 16-0 scoring run over the next nine minutes to completely blow the game open.

Six different Mavericks scored during this run, with Grant kicking things off with what was already her third three-pointer of the quarter at 6:09. Grace Cave and Katie Keitges followed this up with a layup and another three-pointer, respectively. Morgann Gardner would then add a layup of her own, before Akili Felici scored her first three points of the season at 2:48 with a fast break layup and an and-one after getting fouled on the shot. After another layup from Gardner, Sam Mitchell capped off the rally with two free throws at 0:30.

Inside the Second Quarter
Peru State was able to make up some ground during the second quarter, even outscoring the Mavericks 25-23.

The big story in this period, however, was the performance of Omaha's newcomers. Aaliyah Stanley came in at 7:02 on proceeded to score seven points over the next five minutes, including three off a fast break jumper from downtown. Meanwhile, Nikulochkina scored nine of her 12 points this period, including back-to-back 3-PT FGs at 1:16 and 0:39.

Brooklyn Smith also had a couple of good free throws and two defensive rebounds this quarter, while Jaylen Townsend made a free throw and had a steal.

Inside the Third Quarter
The second half is where Omaha truly started to run away with the game. Entering the third quarter leading 49-35, the Mavericks would go up 69-43 by the time the clock hit zero.

After a relatively calm first four minutes, the Mavericks would drop nine unanswered over the next three. Pilakouta was on another level during this time, scoring the first seven points for Omaha on two free throws and three layups. Her final basket came at 4:29 when she caught her own rebound after initially missing on the tip in and converted on her second attempt. She would add four more points to her stat sheet on two more layups later in the period.

Inside the Fourth Quarter
Felici opened up the fourth quarter for Omaha with her first three-pointer of the season at 9:18. From there, the Bobcats then managed to go on their own extended run as Stewart scored six unanswered, going 4-for-4 on free throws in the process.

Smith got Omaha back on the board with her first field goal of the season at 5:53, before scoring another a minute later at 4:37.

Finally, up 88-58 with 15 seconds left, Felici got Omaha to 90 points after picking up an offensive rebound and making the layup. She then made the and-one after being fouled on her shot to give Omaha 91 points for the second match in a row.

Next Up
The Mavericks will finish off their home stand with one of the biggest matches of the season as they host crosstown rival Creighton this Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Baxter Arena.
