Mavericks Fall in First Round of NCAA Tournament

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Omaha women's soccer team made history Saturday as the department's first women's program to play in the NCAA Tournament in the Division I era. The Mavericks took on the top-seeded Fighting Irish. Notre Dame advanced to the second round with a 5-0 win Saturday.

Omaha concludes its 2022 season with a 7-9-6 overall record.

How It Happened
  • Emma Konsmo tallied an early save between the posts under the two-minute mark on a shot from Kiki Van Zanten, but the Fighting Irish needed only four more minutes to strike for their first goal. Korbin Albert scored unassisted at the 5:56 mark.
  • Olivia Wingate then scored two straight for Notre Dame in the 8th and 10th minutes for a 3-0 lead.
  • Sophia Green had a solid look on goal for Omaha in the 33rd minute forcing Mackenzie Wood to make the stop in goal for the Irish. UND had two more shots on target before the half ended, but Konsmo tallied her fifth and sixth saves of the match to hold the Irish off.
  • Just three minutes into the second half, Grace Ostergaard had a high shot attempt for the Mavericks that was countered by Notre Dame by Maddie Mercado. Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen made her first save of the match.
  • Ostergaard placed one more strike on goal for Omaha in the 62nd minute that wouldn't find the back of the net.
  • The Irish tallied two more goals before time expired. Mercado struck in the 82nd minute, while Ellie Ospeck scored on a corner kick in the 85th. Notre Dame advanced with a 5-0 win.
