Omaha capped a strong home weekend with a first-ever win over a regional foe.
The Mavericks improved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-3 victory over shorthanded Wichita State, which had only five players available for the match. It was Omaha's first win over the Shockers in five attempts.
"This was a great way to cap the weekend off – to beat a team that had been pretty dominant in our region the past decade or so," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "They, unfortunately, had been battling injuries and illness, much like us. But they still competed hard with just five healthy bodies."
The Mavericks won by default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, giving them an advantage to start the match. They picked up the doubles point when
Natalie Lorentz and
Rachel Osborn edged Clara Whitaker and Jessie Zheng in the No. 2 position. Wichita State claimed a victory at No. 1 doubles.
The match came down to three-set battle between
Ines Absisan and Zheng at No. 3 singles. Absisan clinched the victory for Omaha by taking the final set in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 result.
Madison Gallegos posted a win at No. 1 singles for the Mavericks, topping Natsumi Kurahashi in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The Shockers had three singles wins, and
Lillian Tiemeyer was the default victor at No. 6 singles.
"We knew it was going to be a fight, and Wichita was motivated to win with what they are dealing with," Summitt said. "The girls are really buying in and believing in one another. Everybody on this team can play, and we are getting good results because of it."
