Omaha began its first home weekend of the spring season in impressive fashion.
The Mavericks (3-0) posted five singles victories, including one by default, and claimed the doubles point in their 6-1 victory over Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
Natalie Lorentz,
Brooke Covington and
Lillian Tiemeyer recorded straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 singles, respectively. And freshman
Rachel Osborn won in a tiebreaker for the Mavericks at No. 1 singles.
Keegan VanPelt won by default at No. 6 singles after the Panthers pulled Darta Dalecka, their No. 1 singles player, following the doubles competition. Everyone else in the UNI lineup slid up one spot, leaving VanPelt with no opponent for singles play. Northern Iowa's win came in a tiebreaker at No. 3 singles.
"I'm really proud of the effort today," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "This was a great team win. Again, the depth picked us up. We were down four players, and everyone stepped up today."
Summitt didn't arrive at Saturday's competition until late in the match because he was waiting for results from a COVID-19 test. He credited the leadership of senior captain
Ines Absisan in his absence.
The Mavericks moved into the lead in the match with their strong doubles play. VanPelt and
Addison Miller claimed a win at No. 2 doubles shortly after
Madison Gallegos and
Colby Kelley won in the No. 3 slot. Lorentz and Osborn were also ahead in their No. 1 match when the Mavericks clinched the point.
Omaha returns the court early Sunday morning for matchup with Wichita State.
