Fidler Clinches Win vs. Kansas City With Buzzer Beater

OMAHA, Neb. – Frankie Fidler's buzzer beater snapped a six-game skid and clinched Omaha's third league win of the season vs. Kansas City Saturday night. Fidler scored a career and game-high 25 points in the 69-68 thriller.
 
The Mavericks improve to 4-18 overall and 3-8 in Summit League action.
 
Leaders for Omaha
Fidler scored a game-high 25 points on 12-of-16 from the field. Dylan Brougham also finished in double-figures with 13 points on 6-of-7 from the field. He finished 1-of-1 from deep for his second career three-pointer.
 
Akol Arop led the Mavericks with eight boards, while Felix Lemetti tallied a personal best seven assists on the night.
 
Leaders for Kansas City
Evan Gilyard II finished with 17 points to lead the Roos. Arkel Lamar posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. He also added two assists, three steals, and one block.
 
Marvin Nesbitt Jr. fell short of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.
 
Team Stats
The Mavericks shot 54.5 percent from the field, while the Roos connected on only 45.6 percent of their attempts. Omaha knocked down five from long range, while KC hit 6-of-20.
 
Omaha led in points in the paint (38-34), second chance points (9-8), and bench points (18-17). The Mavericks also led on the glass outrebounding the Roos, 36-29.
 
Inside the First Half
Brougham was ready out of the jump ball and tallied six of Omaha first eight points to take an 8-4 lead that forced a Kansas City timeout just three minutes into action. The Roos scored five straight out of the break to take their first lead of the game, but a layup from Darrius Hughes swung it back in favor of Omaha. Over the next minute and a half, the game saw two more lead changes with the Roos gaining some separation on a 5-0 run.
 
Kansas City took its largest lead of the game at the 7:21 mark on a free throw from Gilyard. Lemetti hit a three, while Fidler connected on a short jumper to bring the Mavericks within three down the stretch, but Caden Boser's three to end the half gave KC a 33-25 lead at the break.
 
Inside the Second Half
Fidler came alive in the second half scoring 21 of his 25 points in the final 20 minutes. The Mavericks used an 11-2 run spanning just over three minutes to take a 38-37 edge. Fidler had a hand in nine of those 11 points. The game saw three more ties until a jumper from Fidler at the 11:37 mark gave Omaha a two-point lead. The Roos responded with four straight points to swing the lead back in their favor at the 10:39 mark.
 
Omaha wouldn't lead again until Nick Ferrarini and Brougham combined for three straight from deep for the Mavericks for a seven-point lead at the 5:07 mark. Kansas City chipped away down the stretch and regained the lead following a pair of free throws from Gilyard with 1:15 left to play. Fidler struck with 27 second left for a 67-66 edge, but the Roos took a 68-67 lead on a layup from Nesbitt Jr. on the inbound play with 12 seconds left. It wasn't over until Fidler split the double-team on the final possession. He took the ball into the paint and tossed up a floater with his left hand to seal the 69-68 Omaha win at the buzzer.
 
Noting Tonight's Game
-Fidler scored a career-high 25 points. He is just the third Maverick to record a 20+ point game this season. Ferrarini and Lemetti each have two games with 20+ points.
-Brougham also notched a new personal best with 13 points.
-This marked the first win for Omaha in the gray uniforms and first win on a Saturday this season.
-Fidler's buzzer beater snapped a six-game losing streak for Omaha.
-Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler is no longer a member of the team.
 
Up Next
The Mavericks trek up to North Dakota next week. Omaha will make a stop in Fargo on Thursday, Feb. 3 to take on North Dakota State at 7 p.m. to open the week's action.
