MILWAUKEE – Strong singles play from the bottom part of the lineup carried Omaha to a 4-3 road victory over Milwaukee Sunday in the season-opening matchup for both teams at Elite River Glen.
Natalie Lorentz,
Addison Miller and
Lillian Tiemeyer recorded straight sets wins at Nos. 4-6 singles. Then
Rachel Osborn rallied from a set down to top Iva Stejskalova 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to clinch the win.
The Panthers grabbed an early 1-0 lead by capturing two doubles matches. Omaha countered with three singles victories to grab a 3-2 advantage, even after
Ines Absisan fell in straight sets at No. 2 singles.
The Mavericks needed a victory in one of the remaining two matches to clinch their win Sunday. They got it when Osborn pulled away in the decisive set while
Madison Gallegos lost a three-set decision at No. 1.
"What a win to start the spring off with," Omaha coach
Adam Summitt said. "Milwaukee is a talented team, well-coached. They pushed us in doubles and played great tennis. During singles, we had the bottom end of our lineup really step up and play well."
The Mavericks started the day out well and had the lead in all three doubles matches at one point. Osborn and
Keegan VanPelt earned a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, but Milwaukee rallied to win the other two matches to claim the doubles point.
Omaha then forged ahead in the bottom three slots in singles play before Osborn capped the victory.
"This is a prime example of how deep our team can be," Summitt said. "Our depth really got us the win. I'm excited for the rest of the season and this team."
