Omaha Drops Nail-Biter at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Mavericks had a chance at the buzzer to force overtime with the Roos Monday night as they trailed by three with seven seconds left to play. The attempt was short from the corner sealing the night 64-61 in favor of Kansas City.

With the loss, Omaha falls to 3-14 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Leaders for Omaha
Nick Ferrarini led the Mavericks with 17 points off the bench. He was 6-of-12 from the field and hit four at the charity stripe. Kyle Luedtke added 11 points on 4-of-8 with two threes, while Darrius Hughes scored 10 points.

Frankie Fidler tallied a team-leading seven rebounds, while three different Mavericks dished out three assists.

Leaders for Kansas City
Arkel Lamar scored a game-high 20 points. He finished 7-of-15 from the field with two from deep. Marvin Nesbitt Jr. notched 16 points, while Evan Gilyard II added 15 points.

Nesbitt Jr. tallied a game-high eight rebounds, and Gilyard II finished with seven assists and three steals.

Team Stats
The Roos capitalized on 23 Maverick turnovers scoring half their points on them. They also held advantage in the paint, 38-32.

Omaha shot 44.2 percent from the field and knocked down four three-pointers. Kansas City finished shooting 38.5 percent and connected on five from the arc.

Inside the First Half
Akol Arop opened the game with two quick jumpers in the paint for the Mavericks. A basket from Nesbitt Jr. tied the game at the 16:14 mark and a little over a minute later the Roos took their first lead on a jumper from Lamar. Ferrarini and Luedtke combined for three straight from the arc to take a five-point lead midway through.

At the 8:30 mark, Luedtke scored on another jumper in the paint to take their largest lead of the night at 21-13. The Roos got the lead back down to four points three times before Ferrarini's jumper with 3:55 was good for another eight-point lead. Kansas City responded with a 7-0 run for a one point swing their way with 1:36 left in the half. Nesbitt Jr. completed a three-point play to end the half, and the Roos led at the break, 33-30.

Inside the Second Half
The second half saw four lead changes in the first three and a half minutes. The first followed a jumper and dunk from Marco Smith and Dylan Brougham to open the second. Lamar responded for the Roos with a layup and a one-point lead. Arop and Fidler then scored on two consecutive possessions for another lead change before Caden Boser's three-pointer at the 16:37 mark gave the Roos a lead until the 6:38 mark.

Ferrarini scored on back-to-back trips down the court for the Mavericks to tie the game one last time at 57-57. The Roos pulled away with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes. With help at the foul line, the Mavericks got within three of the Roos. With seven seconds left to play, Omaha set up Felix Lemetti in the corner for the final look. It was short hitting the front of the rim and sealing the win for the Roos, 64-61.

Noting Tonight's Game
-Ferrarini has notched double-figures in seven of the last nine games and is on a three-game streak with at least 10 for Omaha.
-Fidler's seven boards was a career-high.
-Ferrarini grabbed five boards for a season-high. He was two shy of his personal best.

The Mavericks return to Baxter Arena to host the Jackrabbits Thursday night. Omaha and South Dakota State tipoff following the women's game at 5 p.m. The anticipated start time is 7:30 p.m.
