Mavericks Falter in Crosstown Meeting at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha fell 1-0 to crosstown rival Creighton Wednesday night. The Bluejays put the game winner away in the 17th minute of action. The Mavericks tallied four shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net for the equalizer.

Omaha falls to 2-4-1 on the year.

How It Happened
  • Both teams came ready to play Wednesday night with bragging rights on the line. The Bluejays took the first strike of the match at the 2:16 mark with an off target attempt by Daniel Espeleta. Luke Smith responded at the 6:51 mark with Omaha's first shot, but it was blocked by a Creighton defender.
  • Fitzroy Cummings took the first shot on target forcing a save in the 14th minute, while Espeleta put his third shot of the match on target. Nathanael Sallah made the diving save for his first of the night.
  • Two minutes later Creighton took a 1-0 edge in the first half. Diego Gutierrez entered the low left goal area and popped a shot over Sallah's shoulder to find the back of the net.
  • In the 37th minute, Tevin Rochester had a breakaway into the box and fired a shot that was bobbled and eventually saved by Kruse in goal. He kept a clean sheet, and the Bluejays took a 1-0 edge into the break.
  • Cummings set up in the box on a corner kick hoping to knot the match in the 47th minute. His header went just wide of the net. Malik Elmi sent a strike from the top of the box three minutes later, but the attempt would be blocked.
  • Gutierrez managed Creighton's first shot of the second half at the 63:36 mark, but it was blocked off his foot by Omaha.
  • Kenji Mboma Dem set up for a free kick and put a shot on goal at 70:36. Kruse blocked it between the pipes.  Stevie Siy gave chase on the rebound and put another shot on target 10 seconds later. Kruse tallied another save with the shot blocked off his legs.
  • Neither team recorded a shot on target in the final 20 minutes leading to a 1-0 Bluejay win.
