Mavericks Run-Rule Game One, Drop Game Two vs. Western Illinois

OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks split the regular season series picking up another win and loss vs. Western Illinois Sunday afternoon. Omaha had a walk-off six inning win in game one, 9-1. The Leathernecks took a 3-2 win in game two.
 
With the split, the Mavericks are 9-23 (4-8) on the year.
 
Game 1: Omaha 9, Western Illinois 1 (6 inn.)
How It Happened  
  • Omaha had no trouble hitting the ball in the first game of Sunday's action. In the bottom of the second, the Mavericks would tally their first run. Sydney Nuismer hit a double to left center early in the inning. She put Omaha up 1-0 on a single from Emily Klosterman two-at bats latter.
  • It quickly became a 2-0 lead when the Mavericks plated another in the third. Allison Helton was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on a grounded out by Syndey Ross.
  • Hollings responded for WIU in the fourth with a solo homer to left center. The Leathernecks cut the lead to one.
  • The Mavericks added another on the fifth with Olivia Aden scoring on a single from Taylor Johnson.
  • Then in the sixth, Omaha posted six runs on six hits for a walk-off run rule. Nuismer tripled to right center to plate Jaelle Johnson to clinch the game, 9-1.

  • The Mavericks outhit the Leathernecks 13-1 in game one.
  • Klosterman went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and tallied two RBI and a run in the action.
  • Nuismer, T. Johnson, and Lexi Burkhardt recorded two hits each in the game.
  • Helton tallied two runs and one RBI.
  • Ross and Hailey Bartz each recorded a steal.
  • Kamryn Meyer pitched a full six innings. She retired eight batters and gave up only one hit.

Game 2: Western Illinois 3, Omaha 2
How It Happened  
  • Western Illinois flipped a switch for game two and recorded two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Rodriguez and Gracia recorded back-to-back hits to left field that each plated a run.
  • The Mavericks got within one in the second inning. Jamie White got on base with a single through the right side. Taylor Johnson then hit them both in with a homer down the left field line.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Klosterman led off with a double to left center to get into scoring position. She was left stranded following three straight outs, and Western Illinois wins 3-2.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Leathernecks out-hit the Mavericks 8-7.
  • Klosterman and Johnson each tallied two for Omaha.
  • Sydney Hampton started for the Mavericks. She falls to 3-9 on the year.
  • Nuismer came in for relief and pitched the final six innings. She recorded four strikeouts.
