Mavericks Add Wichita State Transfer Poor Bear-Chandler

OMAHA, Neb. — Head coach Derrin Hansen announced Friday the addition of local product and Wichita State transfer Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler to the Maverick men's basketball program for 2021-22.

Poor Bear-Chandler, a rising senior, is a 6-9, 250-pound forward who joins the Mavericks after spending the last three seasons with the Shockers. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds over 12.0 minutes per game as a junior and was the first man off the bench in 15 of the 18 contests in which he appeared. In his final season at WSU, he was the backup center on the Shockers' 2021 AAC regular-season championship team and helped them earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. During his freshman season, his squad totaled 22 wins and put together a run to the NIT semifinals.

Poor Bear-Chandler spent the 2017-18 season at Sunrise Christian Academy with the postgraduate team.

A native of Pine Ridge, S.D., Poor Bear-Chandler moved to Omaha for high school, playing for Coach Ben Holling at Omaha Central. He averaged 14.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, helping his team to the state quarterfinals. Poor Bear-Chandler was a second-team Class A all-state pick by the Omaha World-Herald and a third-team Super State selection by the Lincoln Journal Star. He played for Omaha Elite on the AAU circuit.

"We're excited to announce the homecoming of Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler," Hansen said. "He was a four-star prospect out of high school, and after beginning his college career at Wichita State, he will provide us a much-needed frontline presence with the departure of Matt Pile to medical school. Isaiah is a multi-skilled player, which will make him a very difficult matchup in the Summit League, and we can't wait to start working with him."

Poor Bear-Chandler joins Bellevue West product Frankie Fidler in the Mavericks' class of newcomers for 2021-22.
