SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Junior
Joey Machado has been named the Summit League Baseball's Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Machado earned his first win of the season in Omaha's 6-1 victory in game one vs. South Dakota State on Friday afternoon.
"When he's on, Joey is as tough to hit as anybody," said head coach
Evan Porter. "For him to go out there and have that performance was great momentum to open Summit League play."
The Omaha native tossed six shutout innings while only allowing one hit, a double to leadoff the top of the second inning.
Machado struck out a season-high 10 batters, reaching 10+ strikeouts for the first time since March 22, 2019 and the third time overall in his career.
The Mavericks step out of Summit League play this weekend as Omaha ventures to Wichita, Kan., for a three-game series at Wichita State. First pitch between Omaha and the Shockers is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday while wrapping up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
