Clutch Shooting Carries Mavericks to Win in Saturday Shootout

OMAHA, Neb. – Claire Killian hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation and Sarah Schmitt scored a layup at the buzzer of the first overtime in Omaha's 105-102 double overtime win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
 
The win moves the Mavericks to 1-8 (1-4 Summit League) while the Leathernecks drop to 4-15 (3-8).
 
The 105 points are the third most scored by the Mavericks in the Division I era and tied for ninth all-time in program history.
 
Leaders for Omaha
Killian led the Mavericks with a career-high 29 points behind 9-of-14 shooting, including a blistering 7-of-10 performance from three-point range. The seven treys are tied for third all-time in program history while the 70 percent three-point shooting clip is tied for fourth all-time.
 
Josie Filer had a career-high 26 points with nine rebounds and four assists. Freshman Lauren Frost totaled a season-high 19 points and chipped in four assists and four boards. Sophie Johnston scored a season-high 17 points and pulled in a career-high eight rebounds.
 
Leaders for Western Illinois
Grace Gilmore led the way for the Leathernecks with a game-high 46 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Gilmore shot 15-of-25 from the field, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.
 
Elizabeth Lutz knocked down four treys and had 18 points with six rebounds while Carla Flores added 10 points and seven assists.
 
Team Stats
Omaha shot 56.5% (39-of-69) to WIU's 52.9% (37-of-70). The Leathernecks went 16-of-36 from beyond the arc while the Mavericks shot 13-of-22.
 
Omaha outscored Western Illinois 27-10 in points off the bench and the Maverick defense forced the Leathernecks into 24 turnovers.  The game featured 26 lead changes and 13 ties.
 
Inside the First Quarter
The Mavericks outscored Western Illinois 22-17 in the opening quarter while shooting 8-of-12 from the floor. Killian led Omaha with nine points while shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Gilmore had 10 of her points in the first to pace WIU.
 
Inside the Second Quarter
Offense continued to have the upperhand in the second quarter, with the Leathernecks shooting 56.3 percent to edge the Mavericks, 23-20. The two teams traded punches from long distance as Omaha went 6-of-8 from three-point range and Western Illinois shot 5-of-9.
 
Killian and Akili Felici connected on a pair of treys to score six points apiece, followed by five points by Filer.
 
Inside the Third Quarter
Killian and Filer teamed up to score the first seven points of the second half to stretch the Maverick lead to 49-40 with 7:26 left. Western Illinois responded with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a 54-49 lead with 3:51 remaining. Omaha got back within 57-56 after a pair of Killian free throws before WIU held a 62-58 advantage through three quarters.

Killian paced the Maverick offense with seven points while Filer and Frost added five and four points, respectively. Western Illinois shot 6-of-11 from downtown and forced four Maverick turnovers to snag four-point lead after three quarters.
 
Inside the Fourth Quarter
Trailing 79-77 with 1:17 left, Frost hit a jumper to tie the game before WIU rattled off four consecutive points to take an 83-79 lead with 27 seconds remaining. Filer's offensive board and putback with 18 seconds left cut the Leatherneck lead to 83-81.
 
Gilmore converted 1-of-2 free throws with 12 seconds left, prompting an Omaha timeout to advance the ball. Killian caught the ball on the right wing from Johnston, faked out her defender and buried the game-tying three at the buzzer force overtime.
 
Frost led the Mavericks with nine points in the quarter while shooting 4-of-6 from the floor.
 
Inside the First Overtime
Back-to-back layups gave the Leathernecks a 92-88 lead with 27 seconds left. Killian drove the baseline, drawing a foul and scoring on a layup with 15 seconds left to make it a 92-90 game. Filer retrieved the offensive board of the missed free throw before the Mavericks called a timeout with 13 seconds left.
 
Schmitt got the ball on the left wing, drove to the paint and shot a running layup from the right side of the lane that fell through the hoop as the buzzer sounded to force a second overtime.
 
Inside the Second Overtime
Filer scored the first four points and Johnston added a three-pointer to give the Mavericks a 101-94 lead with 1:53 left. The Leathernecks scored the next four points before Frost scored on a fastbreak layup with 1:06 remaining.
 
Gilmore scored a bucket plus the free throw to get WIU within two at 103-101 with 47 seconds left. With four seconds left and Omaha leading 104-102, Anna Deets missed both free throws to clinch the Maverick victory.
