BROOKINGS, S.D. – Junior
Sheridan Rodriguez finished second in the high jump on the final day of competition for the Omaha track & field team at the Summit League Indoor Championship on Sunday.
Rodriguez posted a leap 5-06 ¼, taking second in a tight field that saw just four inches separate the top eight places. It was the highest finish by a Maverick in the championship and a lifetime best for Rodriguez who earned eight points for the team and All-Summit League distinction for her performance.
The mark also put her in a tie for ninth all-time in school history in the event.
On the track, sophomore
Carrie Simonson finished eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.74, earning a point for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks finished the championship with a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of
Scarlett Hill,
Jaycee Schettler,
Chloe Sabatka and
Vanessa Gunderson ran a time of 4:09.29, earning three points. It was the first time the quartet had run the event this season.
Among the other notable performances in the championship,
Kennedy Powell posted a four-inch lifetime best in the triple jump with a leap of 35-02 ½.
Lucy Turner had a six-inch lifetime best in the shot put with a mark of 35-11 ¼.
In the mile,
Danielle Howard ran a time of 5:35.45, a lifetime best by almost four seconds.
"I'm continually proud of the individual performances we have had all season," said head coach
Chris Richardson. "In a time when we weren't even sure we would have an opportunity to compete, they put it all out there. The message to the team was carry the positive momentum to the outdoor season but leave the negative aspects behind."
The Mavericks finished in seventh place with 17 points. North Dakota State repeated as Summit women's champion while South Dakota was second, and South Dakota State was third.
The Mavericks are now off until March 19 when they begin the outdoor season at the Missouri Invitational.
