OMAHA, Neb. – Sophomore
Kirby Proctor scored with 61 seconds remaining in regulation to push the No. 10 Omaha hockey team past Colorado College, 3-2, on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.
The goal completed a comeback from a 2-0 deficit and helped the Mavericks sweep their six-game season series with the Tigers.
Omaha improved to 13-6-1 overall and 13-6-1-3-0 (1) in the NCHC, putting it in fourth place. Their win, coupled with Denver's loss at North Dakota, guaranteed the Mavericks a top-four finish in the NCHC.
The Tigers fell to 3-13-2 overall and 3-13-2-0-2 (2) in the conference, good for eighth.
Inside the First Period
The Tigers opened the scoring at 13:10 when Grant Cruikshank fired a shot under the crossbar for his seventh of the year.
Inside the Second Period
Cruikshank struck again at 3:45 of the period to give the Tigers a two-goal cushion.
The Mavericks halved the lead late in the frame on a power play.
Matt Miller tipped in a shot from
Jonny Tychonick for his seventh goal of the season at 17:06.
Inside the Third Period
The Mavericks tied the game at 12:31 of the period.
Tyler Weiss was stopped on a rush to the net, but
Taylor Ward collected the rebound and slid it under goalie Dominic Basse for his team-leading 10th goal of the year.
On the winner,
Chayse Primeau won an offensive zone faceoff, and Weiss pushed the puck back to Proctor at the left point. His shot through traffic found the top corner for his career-best third goal of the season.
Isaiah Saville earned his career-best 11th win with 26 saves while Basse suffered the loss with 29 saves.
The Mavericks finish the season with four games against North Dakota beginning Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20 in Grand Forks.
GAME NOTES:
- All of Proctor's four career goals have been game winners.
- With points in both games of the series, Chayse Primeau has now scored points in seven straight games (4-6-10), a new team season high.
- The Mavericks went 1-for-5 on the power play while holding the Tigers 0-for-4. UNO killed off all eight CC power plays in the series.
- The Mavericks won their third game of the season when allowing the first goal and their second in as many series.
- With 13 wins, the Mavericks are one from equaling their win total from the 2019-20 season, a feat accomplished over 34 games.
- Three of the six games between Omaha and CC finished 3-2, one in overtime.
