Mavericks Dominate Miami for First NCHC Win

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 9/7 Omaha wrapped up its 10-game season-opening homestand with a dominant performance at Baxter Arena Saturday in its first National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory.

The Mavericks (8-2) built a four-goal lead over the first two periods of their 4-1 win over Miami. Omaha outshot the RedHawks 40-19 and controlled the action. It scored on two power plays and a penalty shot.

Four different players scored for the Mavericks as they evened their NCHC record at 1-1 by taking the series finale. They had also outplayed Miami in Friday's league opener, yet they suffered a 4-3 defeat.

On Saturday, Omaha put pressure on the RedHawks (2-5-1) from the beginning. And it never let up.

"I thought we did everything, right from the start to the finish, extremely well," Maverick coach Mike Gabinet said. "It was nice to get rewarded with a win tonight, especially after two pretty solid hockey games. … I really thought our guys, right from the start, had great decision-making, great pace to the game, great resiliency. They were fun to watch out there tonight."

Nolan Sullivan got Omaha going when he redirected a shot from Nate Knoepke into the net for the game's first goal. Taylor Ward doubled the advantage later in the first period by scoring on a power play. It was the national-best ninth power-play goal of the season for Ward and his 11th overall.

The Mavericks extended the lead to 3-0 midway through the second when freshman Ty Mueller netted his first career goal. The rookie, forced into action due to injury, was playing for only the second time. But he made the appearance memorable by putting away a Brandon Scanlin pass during a power play.

"It was kind of a lucky play," Mueller said. "I was fortunate enough to get out there on the power play. The puck kind of bounced around in the high slot and found me. And I was able to put it home."

Tyler Weiss capped the scoring for the Mavericks by beating Miami goaltender Ludvig Persson on a penalty shot in the closing seconds of the middle period. It was the third goal of the series for the senior.

Matthew Barbolini's power-play goal in the third kept the RedHawks from being shut out, but Omaha had the game well in hand by that point. Maverick goalie Isaiah Saville made 18 saves in his seventh win.

Omaha's 8-2 record through its first 10 games matched the second-best start to a season in school history, equaling the mark of the 2015-16 team. The 2010-11 Mavericks own the top start at 8-1-1.

Sullivan said the key to Saturday's victory was playing for a full 60 minutes after losing a late lead Friday.

"As soon as you get into NCHC play, it just doesn't matter who you're up against, no matter where they stand in the conference," he said. "You need a full 60 to pull it off. Otherwise, you have what happened Friday. We learned from it. I loved the response tonight. It was just good to see out of our guys."
