Omaha's Season Ends in Summit League Semifinal

DENVER, Colo. - Omaha's season came to an end Wednesday night with an overtime goal from No. 2 South Dakota State who advances to the Summit League Championship to play No. 1 Denver Saturday. Three Mavericks tallied two shots each in the season finale.

With the loss, Omaha finishes the 2021 season 9-8-2 overall.

How It Happened
  • Both teams took a defensive approach to the first half of Thursday's match limiting each other to just three shots each.
  • Avery Murdzek and Andrea Daves tallied back-to-back shots for their teams a minute apart to start the first half action. 
  • Murdzek recorded another off-target shot for the Jackrabbits in the 32nd minute.
  • Grace Ostergaard had the closest strike of the half in the 34th minute from just outside the top of the box. The ball hit the right post narrowly missing the back of the net. The match remained tied 0-0 at the half.
  • Rachel Thigpen tallied a save in the opening two minutes of the second half on a shot from Maya Hansen. She'd record another stop in the 66th minute.
  • Andrea Daves and Kaitlyn Cook tallied shots in the second half for Omaha, but neither were on target forcing an overtime as things remained scoreless.
  • Sena Ahovissi nearly won the match in the 94th minute with the only shot attempt of the first overtime, but Jocelyn Tanner got her hands on it for a save.
  • Hannah Heinemann put a header high on target in the opening second of the second overtime. Tanner was able to make the one-handed grab for a save.
  • The overtime battle came to an end in the 107th minute on a golden goal from Kayla Anderson. Thigpen put a hand on the ball, but it snuck by to cross the line for the game winner.

Inside the Box
  • Ostergaard, Daves, and Heinemann each finished with two shots each. 
  • The Mavericks recorded nine total shots with two on goal.
  • Heinemann and Ahovissi tallied the shots on target.
  • Thigpen finished with two saves. She finished her final season with a 5-4-0 record, three shutouts, 25 saves, and a .92 goals against average.
  • Omaha's nine wins marks a Division I record for the program.
