Omaha Gets the Win in Vermillion

VERMILLION, S.D. – The Mavericks battled with South Dakota and came out on top. Omaha keeps the number one spot in the Summit League with the four-set win in Vermillion. Shayla McCormick led the Mavericks with a double- double on 16 kills and 14 digs.

The Mavericks are now 18-8 overall and 14-1 in the Summit League.
 
 
How It Happened
  • The first set started with points going back and forth between Omaha and South Dakota until Omaha pulled its way to a 9-5 lead with a couple of Coyote errors, a kill from Rylee Marshall and an ace from Shayla McCormick. The Mavericks continued to hold its lead through the set until South Dakota pushed within one point making it a 16-15 game. Omaha came out with two straight kills from Marriah Buss and McKenna Ruch to extend the lead 18-15. Omaha held onto the lead all the way to point 22 when South Dakota tied the game with two kills. The game went back and forth and extended into extra points. South Dakota took set one 27-25.
  • The Mavericks dominated in set two. They came out with an early 6-2 lead after McCormick dropped a tip behind the block. Omaha continued to hold the lead and after an ace from Ruch the Mavericks were up 12-10. South Dakota was forced into their second timeout after Omaha extended the lead to 18-11. Buss took a shot to the deep corner to put the game to 21-14. The Mavericks only allowed South Dakota one more point on the set before taking it 25-15.
  • Omaha took an early lead again in set three. They started the game with a strong defense to put the score to 6-3. South Dakota was able to make their way back into the game and took a small lead until a kill from Sadie Limback tied the game 10-10. South Dakota was able to hang onto the lead but a kill from Buss put Omaha within one at 17-16. With a block from Ruch, Omaha took the lead 21-20. The Mavericks were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the set and won a close set three 25-23.
  • An ace from Mountjoy put Omaha up 4-1 to start the fourth set. The teams continued to battle keeping the score close. With a big block from Ruch and Clarkson the Mavericks led 10-7. The score continued to stay close, but a kill from McCormick pulled Omaha ahead 16-14. South Dakota held on tight and tied the game 21-21. Omaha stopped them there and ended the game with an ace from Mountjoy. The Mavericks took set four 25-21.

  • McCormick recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs.
  • Limback and Buss both notched 12 kills.
  • Ruch tallied five blocks, seven kills and two aces. 
  • Mountjoy led the way with 19 digs and three aces.
