Omaha Earns Weekend Sweep of Black Bears

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 17/15 Omaha earned its first series sweep of the season by scoring three unanswered goals to get past Maine 5-3 Saturday in a back-and-forth finale at Baxter Arena.

Matt Miller's shorthanded goal 1:52 into the third period broke a 3-3 tie for the Mavericks, who improved to 3-1 with the victory. Kirby Proctor capped the win by scoring with seven minutes left.

The two teams traded goals through the first two periods with each moving in front at some point. The Black Bears (0-2) opened the third on the power play, looking to reclaim the lead. But Omaha turned the tables on them when Miller darted out of the defensive end and beat the Maine goalie with a backhand.

"My goal was just a result of one time of us outworking them," Miller said. "Martin Sundberg made a great play on the wall and chipped it out to the middle. And I won a foot race and took it to the net."

The highlight-reel goal was his third of the year, and it put the Mavericks in front for good. They extended their advantage a few minutes later when Tyler Weiss found Proctor for the final score.

Weiss skated behind the net on the play then tried to beat goaltender Victor Ostman with a wraparound. He was denied a goal of his own, but regained control of the puck and found Proctor.

"The puck came back out, and I just tracked the guy real quick," Weiss said. "Kirby, I heard him calling for it and I saw him over on the other side. I just fed him, and he made a great shot. Unreal goal."

It put the finishing touches on a weekend in which the Mavericks controlled the play late in games. Omaha outscored Maine 3-0 in the third period Friday before scoring twice in the third on Saturday.

Chayse Primeau opened the scoring in the finale with a power-play goal 2:11 in. Kevin Conley then answered a goal by the Black Bears by finding the net less than two minutes later to put Omaha up 2-1.

Maine rallied to take a short-lived 3-2 advantage midway through the second period. Freshman Cameron Berg pulled the Mavericks even by scoring his second goal of the weekend on a power play.

Weiss assisted on the Berg goal along with Nolan Sullivan. The senior and Brannon McManus each tallied two helpers on the night as Omaha recorded nine assists from seven players on its five goals.

The Mavericks successfully killed off six of seven Maine power plays, surrendering a goal on the other early in the second period. Omaha outshot the Black Bears 29-27 overall, 23-16 after the first period.

"We've had to earn what you get against these good opponents," Maverick coach Mike Gabinet said. "And I thought it was a real mature win for us. We had to stick with it and play really solid defensively."
