DENVER, Colo. - The Mavericks looked to make a statement Saturday night after failing to get a match in with the Pioneers last season due to COVID cancellations. Goals from
Mikkel Fodstad and
Kenji Mboma Dem helped Omaha to a 2-0 shutout vs. Denver and snapped Pioneers' six match unbeaten streak.
With the win Omaha improves to 5-8-1 overall and 3-2-0 in league play.
How It Happened
- The first half started as a defensive battle with neither team managing a shot in the first 18 minutes of action. Thore Boehm finally recorded an attempt at the 18:06 mark that would be saved by Will Desantis in goal.
- Fodstad broke the scoreless draw in the 40th minute of action following a shot by Mboma Dem. Dem's shot hit the post a deflected back to Fodstad who used one touch to beat the Denver goalkeeper who couldn't recover. Omaha took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
- Trevor Wright put the pressure on early in the second half firing a shot on goal in the 52 minute that was saved by Nathanael Sallah between the pipes.
- Mboma Dem added to his point total with a goal in the 59th minute. Ed Gordon stole the ball off a Denver pass up the middle and fed Mboma Dem at the top of the box. He used one touch and put the ball high left to double the lead, 2-0.
- Hugo Kametani almost made it a 3-0 game in the 66th minute with a high shot on goal, but Desantis made the stop. The Mavericks and Pioneers couldn't put anymore shots on goal in the final 24 minutes, and Omaha took a 2-0 win.
Inside the Box
- Fodstad's goal marked the first of his career.
- Mboma Dem's goal is the first of the season for the sophomore forward. His assist makes three for the year.
- Gordon's assist also marks the first of his for the season.
- Denver led with 12 shots, but Omaha edged shots on goal, 4-2.
- Kametani and Mboma Dem both finished with two shots each.
- Sallah earned the win and shutout for the Mavericks improving to 4-4-0 in goal. He made two saves.
- This is the first win against the Pioneers since the 2014 season when the Mavericks won 3-1. Omaha won the league title in 2017 following a 9-8 penalty kick win in the championship match to advance to the NCAA tournament. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtimes.
- Saturday's win is also the first ever win at Denver for the Mavericks.
