COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Omaha women's tennis team concluded its first month of play with two matches at Missouri on Sunday.
The Mavericks dropped the first match, 7-0, and lost the afternoon rematch, 4-1.
"This was valuable experience for the team," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "Missouri is a solid team and on par with some of the top teams in our conference. It was good to play a team at this level and compete.
"We had high energy throughout the day and didn't quit, and that's all I can ask of them."
In the first match, the team of
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, but the Tigers would take the other two matches to earn the doubles point.
Missouri would then earn wins in all six singles matches.
Madison Gallegos had a good showing at No. 1 against Mizzou's Marta Oliveira, going three sets. She won the first, 7-5, before dropping the last two, 6-1, 6-1.
In the afternoon match, the Mavericks earned their point when Kapelevich won the No. 4 singles match against Elys Ventura, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"Marie deserved this win, in both doubles and singles," said Summitt. "She's worked so hard since her freshman year to get back to an all-conference level. And today was her reward for it."
The Mavericks return home to host Missouri State on Saturday, Feb. 6. The match begins at noon at Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
