Fighting Hawks Top Mavericks, 6-2

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 9 Omaha hockey team fell to No. 2 North Dakota, 6-2, on Friday night in the first of six meetings between the two schools this season.

The Mavericks dropped to 9-5-1 overall and 9-5-1-2-0 (1) in the NCHC, putting them fourth.  The Fighting Hawks improved to 13-3-1 overall and 13-3-1-2-0 (0) in the conference, good for first.

Inside the First Period
North Dakota got the first lead of the game when Cooper Moore scored from the left wall just 1:25 into the game.

The Mavericks tied the game on a power play.  Chayse Primeau swept home the rebound of a blast by Taylor Ward at 2:52, earning his fifth goal of the season.

Inside the Second Period
The Mavericks took their first lead of the game just 2:06 into the period when Nolan Krenzen found Martin Sundberg in the clear.  He beat goalie Adam Scheel with a quick shot to the top corner for his sixth goal of the year.

But UND got a goal from Shane Pinto at 6:49, and Mark Senden put his team back in front with a tally at 11:07.

Inside the Third Period
The Fighting Hawks padded their lead in the third, getting goals from Grant Mismash, Jasper Weatherby (empty net) and Judd Caulfield.

Isaiah Saville and Scheel each finished with 30 saves as UND eked out a 36-32 shot advantage.

The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 6:07 p.m.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Mavericks killed off all five UND power plays and now have killed off 49 straight to raise their NCAA-leading PK percentage to 94.5 percent.
  • The two teams combined for 56 penalty minutes with the Fighting Hawks whistled for 36.
