BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Omaha women's tennis team picked up its second win in two days in the opening weekend of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Illinois State 4-2 at the Bloomington Tennis & Turf Complex. The Mavericks are now a perfect 2-0 on the year.
Omaha jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point.
Ines Absisan and
Madison Gallegos dispatched Tara Damnjanovic and Tijana Zlatanovic, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot, while
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich won 6-2 over Laura Fitzgerald and Penelope Abreu from the No. 2 position.
The Mavericks' success carried over to singles play, where they won three matches. Gallegos again delivered from the No. 1 slot, opening with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Damnjanovic. Lorentz won her match at No. 3 over Fitzgerald, 6-2, 7-5, and Kelley sealed it for the Mavericks, winning 6-3, 6-3 over Ivon Mihaleva, from No. 5.
"This was a great win and way to finish the weekend," head coach
Adam Summitt said. "We had a lot of confidence after yesterday's match and played at an even higher level today. We are grateful to be playing and to be in this position. We're looking forward to our next match."
Omaha returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29, welcoming Barton County CC at 2 p.m. for the Mavericks' home opener at Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
