Coach Speak: Evan Porter

I’m fortunate to have spent the past 15 years connected to Omaha as a student, assistant coach and head coach. I had the unique experience to receive my undergrad business degree from Roskens Hall and obtain my master’s from Mammel Hall. In the Fall of 2005, I met my wife in University Village dorm room 427 and proposed to her on that same doorstep 10 years later. I’ve experienced highs and lows on the diamond as a player, assistant and head coach within our baseball program. I’ve seen numerous UNO campus buildings constructed, renovated and repurposed to serve our students. I’m lucky enough to have met countless wonderful students, professors, and admin throughout all our UNO colleges and departments.

There are two things that have remained constant throughout the 15 years I’ve been connected to UNO.

Firstly, the people. The people at UNO are the reason we’ve survived difficult times in the past, and will be the reason we will thrive through the current challenges. The kindness, passion, compassion and togetherness of everyone make me believe UNO’s best days are yet to come. These characteristics are embodied through our campus leaders – from the Chancellor, deans, faculty and staff. They are brightly reflected by our most important people: the students.

It’s a beautiful feeling to see students living on campus, filling up Baxter Arena and engaging with the city to make for a better Omaha. Knowing these students will be our future leaders gives me a sincere sense of comfort.

Secondly, I still can't find a parking spot on campus. 

Our new stadium will begin another chapter for Omaha Baseball and brings another world-class facility to our campus. I'm most excited for the Maverick baseball family to finally have a home. This family includes past/present/future UNO players, coaches and fans.

The stadium also fulfills one of the University's greatest missions – to engage with our community. We will be able to host baseball tournaments for all ages, concerts and outdoor events. The possibilities are endless to connect with Omaha. I'm beyond grateful to be a part of this newest chapter and to still be a Maverick.
