No. 6 Bulldogs Hold Off Mavericks, 3-2

DULUTH, Minn. – No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth scored once in each period and held off a late push from the Omaha hockey team to win 3-2 on Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.

Chayse Primeau and Teemu Pulkkinen each scored for the Mavericks who dropped their third game of the season to the Bulldogs.  The Mavericks are now 12-12-5 overall and 6-8-3-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in sixth place.  The Bulldogs improved to 16-9-2 overall and 11-4-2-0/0 in the conference, good for second place.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 12:59 when Kobe Roth scored his 12th goal of the season.

The Mavericks tied the game just 1:49 into the second period when Primeau knocked in the rebound of a shot by Ryan Brushett for his seventh goal of the season.

But UMD replied on its own power play when Quinn Olson scored at 7:19 to make it 2-1 after two.

The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead midway through the third when Noah Cates slipped a shot under Isaiah Saville at 9:47.

The Mavericks again trimmed the lead to one at 13:31.  Pulkkinen got open in the slot and fired home a pass from Tyler Weiss for his sixth goal of the year.

In spite of pulling Saville for an extra attacker, the Mavericks could not tie the game, getting their best chance when a bouncing puck narrowly eluded the stick of an open Kevin Conley in the closing seconds.

Saville finished with a game-high 38 saves while UMD's Hunter Shepard stopped 24.

The two teams conclude their four-game season series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
