Mavericks On The Road To Miami This Week

The Omaha hockey team makes its final road trip of the regular season, visiting Miami for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29.  Both games begin at 6:05 p.m. from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.

The Teams
Omaha is 13-14-5 overall and 7-10-3-0/0 in the NCHC, putting it in sixth place.  The Mavericks are coming off a 5-0 win and a 3-2 loss to Colorado College at home last weekend.  UNO is 19-23-7 all-time against the RedHawks including a record of 7-12-5 at Miami.  This season, the Mavericks are 7-7-2 on the road and 4-4-2 in their last 10 games.  They are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games at Miami.

Miami is 6-19-5 this season and 3-14-3-2/0 in the NCHC, putting it in eighth place.  The RedHawks are coming off 7-3 and 7-0 losses at Denver last weekend.  MU is 2-10-3 at home this year and 0-8-2 in its last 10 games.  The RedHawks are winless in their last 11 games.

Last Time Out
The Mavericks split a pair of games with visiting Colorado College last weekend.  On Friday, Isaiah Saville made 22 saves, and the Mavericks put up four goals in the third period to pull away for a 5-0 win.  Jason Smallidge scored the eventual game winner on a power play late in the first period.  The Mavericks put the game out of reach with a blitz of three goals in a span of 5:06 early in the third as Martin Sundberg, Noah Prokop and Kevin Conley all scored.  Brandon Scanlin added his first goal since November to finish the scoring at 13:53.

On Saturday, Teemu Pulkkinen and Conley both scored, and Saville made a game high 30 saves in a 3-2 loss.

  • Junior Kevin Conley led the team in scoring during the series against Colorado College with two goals and an assist for three points.
  • In Friday's game, freshman Isaiah Saville made 22 saves to earn his first career shutout.  That gives both Saville and fellow freshman Austin Roden a shutout this season.  Roden earned his on Oct. 12 against Alabama Huntsville.
  • Freshman Nolan Sullivan is third in the NCHC and 14th nationally in face-off winning percentage, winning 60 percent of his draws.
  • The Mavericks have now earned two shutouts this season, both by 5-0 scores.
  • Omaha scored first in both games against Colorado College last weekend.  UNO is 8-4-4 when scoring first this season.
  • The Mavericks are 7-7-2 on the road this season with five wins coming in NCHC play.
Together Everyone Achieves More
Omaha has taken team play to heart this season.  Through 32 games, 21 of UNO's 22 skaters who have played have registered at least one point.  Eighteen of those 22 have scored at least one goal with 17 players, led by Taylor Ward (16), earning multiple goals.

Team play was never more evident than in the Mavericks' series at Colorado College on Jan. 24-25.  Ten different players scored UNO's 10 goals while 14 of the 20 players who skated registered at least one point.

The Mavericks now have four players who have scored 20 or more points.  Ward and Kevin Conley lead the Mavericks in scoring with 27 points.  Tyler Weiss (4-18-22) and Chayse Primeau (8-12-20) both have reached the 20-points plateau.  

Fourteen players have scored 10 or more points this season, third-most among all NCHC teams behind North Dakota (16) and Western Michigan (15).

Acquitting Themselves Well
UNO's freshman class has gotten off to a good start in its first season of college hockey.  The Mavericks' greenest class is ninth in the nation in freshman scoring with 78 points in 32 games, an average of 2.44 points per game.

Four Mavericks rank in the top six in NCHC freshman scoring for all games played.  Nolan Sullivan (7-10-17) and Joey Abate (9-8-17) are tied for third, Ryan Brushett (1-15-16) is fifth and Brandon Scanlin (3-11-14) is sixth.  Abate is third in freshman goals while Brushett is first in assists.

Among The Conference Leaders
The Mavericks have several players who rank among the top players in the NCHC.  In addition to the notes above on the freshmen, Taylor Ward and Kevin Conley are part of a six-way tie for eighth in the conference with 27 points in 32 games.  Ward is second in the conference with 16 goals and is tied with five others for third with five power play goals.  Zach Jordan is in a seven-way tie for 12th in goals with 11.

Tyler Weiss is 10th with 18 assists.

Scanlin is 11th in defenseman scoring with 14 points.  Ryan Jones is tied with North Dakota's Jonny Tychonick for 17th with 11 points while Dean Stewart is tied with two others for 19th with 10 points.

Up Next
The Mavericks finish the regular season by hosting No. 3/1 North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, March 6-7.  Both games start at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.
