Primeau Delivers Shootout Win Over No. 3 Bulldogs

OMAHA, Neb. – Junior Chayse Primeau narrowly missed a breakaway in overtime, but he made no mistake in the ensuing shootout, scoring in the sixth round to give the No. 17 Omaha hockey team a shootout victory over No. 3 Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday afternoon at Baxter Arena.

The game was officially recorded as a 2-2 tie, but the Mavericks earned two standings points with the shootout triumph.  Primeau had the goal that ignited the Mavericks' comeback and assisted on the other while Tyler Weiss had helpers on both goals.

The Mavericks improved to 4-3-1 overall and 4-3-1-1-0 (1) in the NCHC.  The Bulldogs are now 5-1-2 overall and 5-1-2-0-0 (1), good for first.

INSIDE THE FIRST PERIOD
The Bulldogs were looking to bounce back from a 4-1 upset loss to Colorado College on Sunday, and they set the tone early, outshooting the Mavericks 12-5 in the first period.

UMD took the lead when Nick Swaney scored shorthanded at 12:36.

INSIDE THE SECOND PERIOD
The Mavericks had a good chance turned aside at the end of a penalty kill early in the period.

Later, the Bulldogs doubled their lead when Swaney's shot from the left face-off circle broke off Isaiah Saville and trickled over the goal line at 12:38.

INSIDE THE THIRD PERIOD
The Mavericks began their comeback thanks to a series of fortunate bounces.  Weiss tried to make a cross-ice pass, but the puck deflected instead toward the goal where Primeau tipped it past goalie Ryan Fanti at 2:47 for his third of the season.

Taylor Ward would be the beneficiary of tough work by Primeau in the slot.  Primeau jabbed a loose puck through traffic to Ward who quickly fired a shot over Fanti's shoulder to make it 2-2.

INSIDE THE SHOOTOUT
The first three rounds of the shootout were uneventful thanks to strong play from the goalies.  In the fourth round, UMD's Cole Koepke scored, but Kevin Conley responded for UNO to even it.

In the sixth round, UMD's Quinn Olson got poke-checked by Saville, setting the stage for Primeau who zipped a shot past Fanti's blocker to end it.

The Mavericks are back in action on Friday, Dec. 18 when they take on Western Michigan at 3:35 p.m.  Omaha is the designated home team for the game.
