Filer Leads Mavericks in Season Opener

AMES, Iowa – The Omaha women's basketball team fell 69-43 in its season opener at No. 15 Iowa State on Wednesday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.

Josie Filer led the Mavericks with 10 points and five rebounds while shooting 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Lauren Frost added six points with a team-leading eight boards and four steals in her collegiate debut.
 
Leaders for Iowa State
Ashley Joens scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor to pace the Cyclones. Kristin Scott fell one rebound short of a double-double, totaling 10 points and 9 rebounds while handing out three assists.
 
Inside the First Quarter
The two teams opened the game trading three-pointers, with Claire Killian burying the trey to net Omaha's first bucket of the season with 8:21 left in the quarter. Despite being outscored 11-4 in the final eight minutes, the Mavericks forced Iowa State into eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes.
 
Inside the Second Quarter
Iowa State shot 42.1 percent from the floor and stretched its lead to as many as 13 in the second quarter. Omaha cut the deficit to nine after layups from Sophie Johnston and Killian late in the quarter, but ISU held off any late Maverick rally to take an 11-point lead into halftime.
 
Inside the Third Quarter
The Cyclones held the Mavericks to 17.6 percent shooting from the field and outscored Omaha 21-9 in the quarter. Iowa State shot 8-of-18 from the floor and knocked down two three-pointers to push the lead to 54-31 heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
Inside the Fourth Quarter
Omaha and ISU went back-and-forth in the fourth as the Cyclones edged the Mavericks, 15-12. Frost chipped in four points, four rebounds and two steals while playing all 10 minutes. The Mavericks garnered a 10-8 advantage in rebounds while forcing Iowa State into four turnovers.
