OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team rallied back from a second half deficit and defeated Oral Roberts 60-54 in Baxter Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (6-9, 1-1) limited Oral Roberts (5-10, 0-2) to just 17 second half points for the win.
LEADERS FOR OMAHA
Mariah Murdie led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds on 5-of-11 shooting.
Josie Filer and
Rayanna Carter followed with 10 points each.
Claire Killian finished with eight points on a pair of threes made.
LEADERS FOR ORAL ROBERTS
Keni Jo Lippe posted a game-high 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Rylie Torrey was the other double-digit scorer for the Golden Eagles with 10 points.
TEAM STATS
Omaha shot 23-for-57 from the field (40.4%), 5-of-20 (25%) from deep and 9-for-10 (90%) from the free throw line. Oral Roberts went 20-for-49 (40.8%) from the floor, 4-of-16 (25%) beyond the arc and 10-for-13 (76.9%) at the charity stripe. Omaha forced 20 ORU turnovers which is the most against a Division I opponent this season. ORU won the rebounding battle 33-31.
INSIDE THE FIRST HALF
Both teams were tied at 15-all after one quarter of play. Oral Roberts, however, took control of the game in the second quarter on a 22-14 surge and built a 37-29 lead at the half – courtesy of a 14-6 run in the final 4:22 of the half.
INSIDE THE SECOND HALF
Omaha rallied back and eventually took a 40-37 lead on back-to-back Killian threes at the 6:27 mark in the third. That proved to be the turning point of the game as the Mavericks never trailed from that point forward. Oral Roberts tied the score at 47-all in the opening minute of the fourth, but the Mavericks responded and outscored them 13-9 in the final 10 minutes.
ORU cut the Omaha lead to one (55-54) with a three by Lippe with 2:14 to go, but the Mavericks answered with an
Ella Ogier layup. Up three with nine seconds to go, Ogier knocked down her second free throw and put the game out of reach. Two more Filer free throws ended the game with a 6-point win.
NOTES
• Omaha trailed by eight (37-29) at the half. The last time Omaha won when trailing at the half was Dec. 4 against Kansas City.
• The Mavericks erased a four-game skid to the Golden Eagles with the win.
