DES MOINES, Iowa – The Omaha women's tennis program secured a 5-2 win in its season opener against Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon.
"It was a great way to start the 2020 season," said director of tennis
Adam Summitt. "We've had some of the best practices I've had during my time here and I feel like it translated to the matches. Doubles was a great sight to see. That helped us get the momentum early, which led in to singles. We got up quick in a lot of matches and credit to UNI for fighting and no rolling over. They made it tough and forced us to earn the win. I'm looking forward to a good test against Iowa State tomorrow."
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after they secured the doubles point with sweeps on all three courts. The duo of
Ines Absisan and
Madison Gallegos won 6-2 at No. 1, while
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich won 6-3 at No. 2. On No. 3,
Savanna Crowell and
Emily Behling defeated their opponent 6-4.
In singles play, Omaha came out victorious on four of the six courts. Absisan won 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1, Gallegos defeated her opponent 7-6 (4), 6-1 at No. 2 and freshman
Lillian Tiemeyer won in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (6), at No. 5. At No. 6, Crowell won her match 7 (5), 6-3.
