Omaha Drops Five-Set Thriller To Idaho

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Omaha volleyball fell in a five-set heartbreaker to Idaho Friday evening at the Grand Canyon Invitational.

The Mavericks dropped a 3-2 result (25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 18-25, 10-15) which marks the second-straight five set loss for the Mavericks.

NOTES
•    Omaha is now 1-3 in five-set matches.
•    The Mavericks fall to 6-6 overall while the Vandals improve to 4-6.
•    Idaho takes a 1-0 lead in the series history.
•    Three Mavericks notched double-digit kills in Anna Blaschko (16), Claire Leonard (14) and Sadie Limback (11).

INSIDE SET ONE
Omaha sparked a 5-1 lead in the opening set off an Idaho service error, capped off by a Blaschko kill. The Mavericks proceeded to close out the set on a monumental 7-0 run that included a pair of Limback kills for the 25-14 win.

INSIDE SET TWO
The Mavericks were able to hang around in the second set, but trailed 6-4 early. Down three, Omaha was able to make a run and tie it at 17-all. The Vandals, however, put together a 3-0 spurt and built a 20-18 lead late. Omaha was able to cut it to one (20-19) after a Leonard kill, but three-straight Idaho points put the set out of reach, as the Vandals evened the match up with a 25-21 win.

INSIDE SET THREE
A crucial third set fell in favor of the Mavericks via an early 11-4 run that forced an Idaho timeout. Leonard entered double-digit kill territory and forced an Idaho timeout as the Mavericks led 17-10 in the set. Omaha was able to re-take a 2-1 lead in the match after it cruised to a 25-20 set victory.

INSIDE SET FOUR
Idaho bounced back and forced a fifth set after it went on a 7-1 run mid-way through the frame. That run proved to be the turning point in the set as the Vandals increased their lead to 19-13 over Omaha. Despite some late efforts, the gap was too wide as Idaho won 25-18 and put Omaha in its second-straight fifth-set match.

INSIDE SET FIVE
The Mavericks were never able to gain the lead in the final set after Idaho opened with a 7-3 advantage. Omaha cut the deficit to just two (8-6) when Rylee Marshall notched a kill and forced Idaho to use a timeout. Out of the break, however, Idaho scored three-straight and increased its lead to five points over Omaha. Two-straight points by the Mavericks kept them in the game, but the Vandals were able to win 15-10 on an Omaha attack error.
