Omaha Splits Final Matches at Bluejay Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha volleyball program split its final two matches Saturday at the Creighton Bluejay Invitational. 

Omaha fell (15-25, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25) to No. 12 Washington in four sets and swept Drake (25-16, 25-21, 25-21) in the final match. 

•    Omaha's 25-19 third set win over No. 12 Washington marked the first time in the Division I era (2011-present) that the team has won a set over a ranked opponent. 
•    Claire Mountjoy garnered Bluejay Invitational All-Tournament honors. 

MATCH ONE: Omaha 1, No. 12 Washington 3 
Omaha dropped the first two sets, but pulled together a monumental third set to force a fourth. The No. 12 Huskies, however, were able to hold on and defeat Omaha 3-1 in the match. 

Anna Blaschko led the way with a team-high of 12 kills on .478 hitting. Isabella Sade and Sadie Limback followed with 11 kills apiece. Washington's Kara Bajema had a double-double of 16 kills on .308 hitting with 11 digs and four blocks. 

INSIDE SET ONE
Omaha fell behind early by a score of 6-3 in the opening set. The deficit continued but a Rylee Marshall kill was able to cut the Washington lead at 11-7 through the frame. Omaha pulled to within three (12-9) after a block assist by Marshall and Limback. The Huskies' lead built to 18-11 after a short run and forced Omaha to call timeout. From there, Omaha fell 25-15 in the opening set. 

INSIDE SET TWO
A back-and-forth second set featured seven ties and three lead changes throughout the frame. A Limback kill put the team ahead 5-4, but the Huskies responded and retook at 10-7 lead. Three-straight Omaha points tied it up at 10-all, capped off by a pair of Washington attack errors. 

Later on, the Mavericks found themselves in a 15-12 hole, but rallied back and evened the score up at 15-all after Blaschko notched back-to-back kills. Washington, however, was able to pull ahead by three (22-19), which proved to be enough cushion to win the second set, 25-20. 

INSIDE SET THREE 
Omaha sparked a 5-1 run to open the match with a pair of service aces by Sade. The Mavericks eventually led 11-5, its largest lead of the match, but the Huskies responded with a 6-0 run and tied the score. Nine lead changes followed as each team traded points throughout the set. Down 19-18, the Mavericks pulled together 7-0 run after Williams recorded three-straight service aces and Sade blasted a kill in the middle of the floor for the 25-19 set victory. 

INSIDE SET FOUR
Omaha trailed early in the fourth set and saw itself behind early. Blaschko notched her 12th kill, which pulled Omaha to within a pair (8-6). The Mavericks eventually clawed their way back into the match and tied the score up at 13-13 with a Husky ball-handling error. 

Three-straight Washington points, however, forced Omaha to use a timeout. Washington eventually built a 23-19 lead, but Omaha refused to lay down. Two-straight points sparked by a kill from Limback made it 21-23. After Washington recorded a point, Limback had another kill that made it 24-22. The Huskies eventually held on and edged Omaha 25-22 for the 3-1 match win off a kill. 

MATCH TWO: Omaha 3, Drake 0 
Led by a pair of Mavericks with double doubles, the Omaha volleyball program swept Drake in its final match at the Bluejay Invitational. Claire Leonard and Sami Clarkson notched their first-career double-doubles in the win. Leonard posted 11 kills and 11 digs, while Clarkson had 39 assists and 11 digs. Sade had a match-high 15 kills, while Limback and Marshall both had six blocks apiece. 

INSIDE SET ONE
Omaha sparked a 3-0 lead to open the match after a pair of kills by Limback and Marshall, along with a Clarkson ace. The Bulldogs were able to even the score up at 12-all, but Omaha sparked a 5-0 run that proved to be the difference maker in the set. Another 4-0 run late in the frame put Omaha ahead 23-15 after a kill from Sade. The Mavericks cruised to a 25-16 win in the first set. 

INSIDE SET TWO
The Mavericks, once again, led 3-0 early on and eventually built a 7-3 lead. Drake rattled off a 4-0 scoring run and took a 12-11 lead over the Mavericks. The Bulldog lead increased to 16-14 late in the match, but Omaha scored four-straight during a crucial time after a Sade kill and a pair of attack errors by Drake. Over the next eight points, Omaha outscored the Bulldogs 8-1 and built a 23-20 lead after a kill by Marshall. Limback secured the final two points on a forceful kill and a scorching service ace that dropped in the middle of the court. 

INSIDE SET THREE 
A pair of short scoring runs helped Omaha build a 10-5 lead in the final set. Drake, however, clawed itself back into the match and cut the Maverick lead at 14-12. Omaha did not relinquish the lead and was able to build a 22-16 lead in the third set. The final two kills came from Limback and Leonard for the 25-21 win and for the match victory.
