Mavericks Stifled By Huskers In Mid-Week Action, 8-5

PAPILLION, Neb. – The Omaha baseball program dropped its mid-week home game against in-state foe Nebraska, 8-5, Wednesday evening at Werner Park.

The Mavericks (21-10-1) recorded five hits on two errors, while the Huskers (21-11) notched 11 hits and an error. Omaha also falls to 0-3 in mid-week games for the 2019 season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Parker Smejkal had a team-high two hits with a pair of RBI, while Thomas DeBonville recorded two RBI and blasted his fourth home run of the season. Max Gamm and Braden Rogers also recorded a hit. Nebraska's Luke Roskam went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and three RBI with two doubles.

On the mound, Tyler Daugherty was credited with the loss (1-2) and Nebraska's Robbie Palkert earned the win (2-2). The Huskers' Colby Gomes recorded his seventh save of the year. In just his second collegiate start, Jackson Gordon tied his career-high of four strikeouts for the second time with one walk, four hits and four runs allowed.

INSIDE THE INNINGS
Omaha got off to a rocketing start when the team loaded the bases in the bottom of the first. Smejkal came up to the plate and cracked a single for two RBI that scored Gamm and Keil Krumwiede. The next run came on a DeBonville groundout for an RBI that brought home Ben Palensky and made it 3-0 Mavericks in the bottom of the first.

Nebraska rattled off four unanswered runs in the second and third innings. A sacrifice fly in the second plated the first Husker runner. That preceded a homer and a two-RBI double that made it 4-3 Huskers in the third. Omaha was able to load the bases once again in the bottom of the inning and tie it at 4-4 when Breyden Eckhout was walked.

Two Nebraska singles and a double in the eighth gave them an 8-4 cushion late in the game. DeBonville was able to give the Mavericks a spark with his solo-shot homer to right field and make it an 8-5 game in the bottom of the eighth, but it would be the final run.
