RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Omaha softball team lost a close 2-1 decision to San Diego on day two of the Highlander Classic in Riverside, Calif.
Freshman
Lexi Burkhardt led the Mavericks at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Junior
Emma Dargy went 1-for-3, while junior
Hailey Bartz added an RBI sac fly.
Starter sophomore
Sydney Hampton (1-8) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work. Freshman
Ryanne Millington pitched the final 0.2 innings and did not allow a hit.
Omaha and San Diego were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. Burkhardt opened the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on
Emily Klosterman's sac bunt. Bartz then lofted a sac fly to right field that scored Burkhardt and put the Mavericks ahead 1-0.
San Diego struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, pinch hitter Hayley Hensley hit a two-run home run that gave USD the 2-1 victory.
Omaha wraps up tournament play on Sunday, March 9 with a pair of games. The Mavericks start the day with an 11 a.m. (CT) game against Houston before playing UC Riverside at 1:30 p.m. (CT). Links to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
