Baseball Sweeps Santa Clara In Doubleheader

SANTA CALRA, Calif. – The Omaha baseball team swept Santa Clara in its Saturday doubleheader. The Mavericks also win their first weekend series of the season.

The Mavericks took the first game of the doubleheader with a 2-0 shutout win and followed up with a 7-4 result later in the day.

GAME ONE: Omaha 2, Santa Clara 0
The Mavericks earned their second-straight shutout win by an identical score from the night before. Payton Kinney improved to 3-0 on the bump pitching nearly a complete game of 8.0 innings. The Firth, Neb., native had six strikeouts on three walks allowed. Tyler Daugherty garnered his third save of the season in relief.

Both Thomas DeBonville and Ben Palensky recorded an RBI. Palensky's ground out advanced Josh Scribner from third to home in the top of the second. The second Maverick run came an inning later, when DeBonville singled down the first base line to score Jack Lombardi.

The Broncos left the bases loaded on two different occasions in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, but could not muster any runs.

Overall, Santa Clara recorded seven hits and one error, while two of the Mavericks' three hits resulted in two runs.

GAME TWO: Omaha, 7, Santa Clara 4
Omaha continued its winning ways with a 7-4 win over Santa Clara to cap off the doubleheader. Braden Rogers led the way with two RBI and a double on 3-for-4 at bats. Keil Krumwiede also had two RBI, while Lombardi, DeBonville and Brett Bonar each tallied an RBI. Spencer Koelewyn earned his first win of the season (1-1) with 5.0 innings pitched, seven strikeouts with six walks. Daugherty, once again, came into action late and notched his fourth save with three strikeouts through the final 1.1 innings pitched.

The Mavericks plated their first run in the top of the third when Lombardi singled to left that scored Josiah Scott. Santa Clara answered off a ground out RBI that tied it at 1-1. Omaha poured on a scoring surge in the top of the fifth. Keil Krumwiede singled to center for a pair of RBI, followed by a DeBonville triple for another run. The fourth run of the inning came off a Brett Bonar sacrifice fly that scored DeBonville and made it 5-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Santa Clara cut it to three off a single-RBI to center. Another sacrifice fly by Santa Clara cut Omaha's lead at 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Despite the comeback, Omaha answered with a left field double from Rogers for two RBI that made it 7-3.

Santa Clara juiced the bases in the bottom of the eighth and scored the next run on a sacrifice fly.  The Mavericks saw another close call as the Broncos loaded the bases once again, but were able to hold on and close out the inning, allowing only one run.
