Mavericks Explode With 26-0 Rout Over Purdue Fort Wayne

OMAHA, Neb. – A third-inning surge vaulted the Omaha baseball team to a 26-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne for the series sweep Sunday afternoon.
 
NOTES
  • Omaha wins its 10th straight game for the first time since 2011 (11 straight, March 18-April 2)
  • The Mavericks' 26 runs scored are the most in program history for the Division I era, and tie for the most since 2011 (won 26-20 vs. Fort Hays State, April 22, 2011)
  • The program record for runs is 28, scored against Westmar (1976 season, won 28-1)
  • Parker Smejkal's grand slam is the first since Ben Palensky's last season (vs. Purdue Fort Wayne, March 17, 2018).
  • Omaha's 6-0 Summit League start is the best since the 2015 season, where that team also started 6-0. 
 
LEADERS FOR OMAHA
Along with his grand slam, Smejkal went 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBI, two doubles and three runs scored. Keil Krumwiede went 4-for-6 with three runs, two doubles and four RBI. Thomas DeBonville was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, while Josh Scribner had a hit with three RBI and a double. Palensky notched three hits (3-for-4) with an RBI and a double.
 
Spencer Koelewyn tied his career-high of eight strikeouts for the third time with only one hit allowed though 5.0 innings on the bump. The sophomore southpaw improved to 3-1 on the season, while Purdue Fort Wayne's Shane Odzark falls to 0-4 on the season.
 
INSIDE THE INNINGS
After both teams went three up and three down in the first, DeBonville knocked a two-shot homer past the right field fence that gave Omaha a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Cue the run, as the Mavericks plated eleven runs in the third with the bases loaded on three singles and three walks, a hit by pitch and a double.
 
Smejkal blasted his first-career grand slam in the top of the fifth that made it 17-0 Omaha. The Mavericks would go on to score six in the fifth and seven in the sixth to close out the game with the 26-0 shutout.
 
UP NEXT
Omaha makes its first mid-week trip of the season with a Tuesday night tilt at Wichita State. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. (CST). Following that road trip, Omaha makes its way back home as it plays host to Western Illinois Friday, March 29, through Sunday, March 31, for some Summit League action.
