Mavericks Forge 3-3 Tie with Denver on Senior Night

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team got two goals from sophomore Kevin Conley to erase a two-goal deficit and earn a 3-3 tie with No. 6 Denver on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

The Pioneers would score in the 3-on-3 overtime to earn the extra standings point.  With the one point earned from the tie, the Mavericks are now 9-20-3 overall and 5-15-2-0/1 in the NCHC, putting them in a tie with Miami for seventh.

Denver is 19-8-5 overall and 11-8-2-2/1, good for third place.

The Mavericks trailed 3-2 entering the third period and began the first 3:05 killing off a major penalty to Ryan Jones.

UNO got the tying goal at 14:40 of the third when Conley hammered home a pass from Tyler Weiss for his second goal of the game.  The tally capped a 3-for-6 night on the power play for the Mavericks against the NCHC's third-best penalty-killing team.

After an evenly played 5-on-5 overtime, Denver ended the game at 3-on-3 when defenseman Les Lancaster scored with a shot from the left wing just over a minute in.

But for the end result, the game was a fitting conclusion to the Mavericks' home schedule and Senior Night activities.

The Mavericks set a physical tone from the opening faceoff and carried the play, at one point outshooting the Pioneers, 11-1.  Still, DU opened the scoring when Kyle Mayhew fired a shot through a crowd for his first career goal at 18:38.

The Mavericks wasted no time tying the game.  While on the power play, Dean Stewart fired a shot through traffic that beat goalie Devin Cooley at 19:37.  It was Stewart's career-best fifth goal of the year and snapped UNO's string of four straight games without a power play goal, a season high

Denver retook the lead 1:24 into the second period when Liam Finlay banked in a shot off the post.  Kohen Olischefski made it 3-1 at 13:22 when he beat Evan Weninger from the slot.

The Mavericks responded with another power play goal.  Jones fed Conley on the right wing, and Conley ripped a wrist shot to the top corner to make it 3-2 after two.

Weninger made 22 saves while Cooley stopped 31.  The Mavericks outshot the Pioneers for the second straight game, 34-25.

The Mavericks finish the regular season at North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.  Both games will be shown live on Cox YurView Channel 1013 in Omaha.

  • In addition to Conley's two goals, both Jones and Weiss finished with two points in the game.
  • Weninger is now just 12 saves from tying Dan Ellis for Omaha's career saves lead.
