SAVANNAH, Ga. – Omaha suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Savannah State in the second game of the series Saturday, 5-4.
After leading 4-0 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Savannah State plated four runs and forced the game into extra innings. A single-RBI in the bottom of the 11th inning gave them the win.
LEADERS
Thomas DeBonville went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and an RBI on the day.
Brett Bonar was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.
Parker Smejkal and
Braden Rogers both went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
On the mound,
Payton Kinney threw 6.0 innings without allowing a single run, allowed three hits and two walks.
Richie Holetz pitched 2.2 innings allowing four hits, four runs and three walks with two strikeouts.
Tyler Daugherty earned the loss (0-1) with 2.0 innings pitched, one earned run allowed, one walk and a strikeout. Savannah State's Joey Roberson improved to 1-1, allowing only one hit, while starter Caleb Hill pitched 7.0 innings allowing eight hits, four earned runs and five strikeouts.
INSIDE THE INNINGS
Omaha immediately jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but unfortunately the runs stopped there. In leadoff, Lombardi got on base and then DeBonville tripled down the left field line that made it 1-0 Mavericks. A Bonar single RBI scored DeBonville made it 2-0, followed by two more single RBIs from Smejkal and Rogers that put the Mavericks up by four.
Nothing would happen on either side until the bottom of the ninth. Omaha was one out away from the win, but Savannah State was able to put a runner in scoring position and get on the board. After the runner advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third, two more walks loaded the bases for the Tigers. Another walk scored the first run for Savannah State, which preceded a double down the right field line for three RBI and forced extra innings.
Bonar and Daugherty both put themselves in scoring position in the 10th and 11th innings, but were left on base. In the bottom of the 11th, Savannah State put two runners on base with two outs once again. A walk-off single to right field plated the runner from second for the 5-4 win.
LOOKING AHEAD
