OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha baseball defeated North Dakota State 7-6 in 13 innings of play to open The Summit League slate.
The Mavericks (9-5-1, 1-0 Summit League) won on a walk with the bases loaded to earn the seventh run and defeat the Bison (2-9, 0-1) Saturday night at Millard North High School.
NOTES
-Omaha is now 12-13-1 in extras in the Division I era.
-Tonight was the longest extra-inning game since a 13-inning game vs. Fort Wayne on May 5, 2017, when the Mavericks also won 7-6.
LEADERS
Brett Bonar went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a double and three RBI.
Braden Rogers finished with a double on 1-for-5 hitting and an RBI, while
Keil Krumwiede also had an RBI going 2-for-6.
Thomas DeBonville (1-for-7) notched a double, while
Ben Palensky (2-for-6) recorded a triple.
Matt Bondarchuk and
Max Gamm also recorded an RBI.
Tyler Daugherty (1-1) earned his first-career win with six strikeouts through 4.1 innings pitched. He also allowed no hits, runs or walks. Starter
Joey Machado tossed four strikeouts with two runs allowed, four hits and one walk. His 18-inning shutout streak was snapped in the top of the sixth.
NDSU's Gabe Pilla fell to 0-2 on the season with three walks, one run and one hit allowed on a strikeout. Both Zach Smith and Parker Harm recorded seven strikeouts apiece for the Bison.
INSIDE THE INNINGS
Following a DeBonville fielder's choice, Krumwiede put the Mavericks on the board with a single that scored his teammate in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of NDSU RBI put them ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth, but Bonar responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-shot homer to right center that made it 3-2 Omaha.
NDSU doubled in the top of the seventh for two RBI, but the Mavericks were able to respond with two singles by Gamm and Bondarchuk, followed by a Bonar double in the bottom of the seventh.
Up 6-4 in the top of the ninth, NDSU was able to force extras on a single to left field for two RBI. The Mavericks saw runners in scoring position on four separate occasions, but it was not until the bottom of the 13
th, where the team loaded the bases. Rogers then stepped up to the plate and after he faced a full-count, the last pitch went off center and plated Bondarchuk from third for the game-winner.
