DES MOINES, Iowa – The Omaha men's tennis team opened Summit League play, falling to No. 47 Drake 6-1 Friday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Mavericks are now 2-8 (0-1 Summit League), while the Bulldogs improved to 8-4 (2-0).
Drake won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The duo of
Abdoul Ouattara and
Matt Dunn gave Omaha its lone win with a 7-6 (4) win over Bayo Philips and Finley Hall at No. 2.
The Mavericks dropped five of the six matches to the Bulldogs. Ouattara pulled the biggest upset of the evening by defeating No. 72 Vinny Gillespie in straight sets at No. 1. Ouattara won the first set 7-6 (6) but dropped the second set 7-6 (3). In the decisive 10-point super tiebreaker, Omaha's top player won 10-6.
Davis Lawley and
Nathan Reekie both lost highly contested 6-4, 6-3 matches at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Omaha returns to the court next weekend with a pair of matches. The Mavericks head across town to play Creighton at the Hanscom Tennis Center on Friday before hosting Chicago State on Saturday.
