Omaha, Neb. – The latest chapter of the crosstown rivalry ended with the Omaha men's tennis team defeating Creighton 5-2 on Friday at the Hanscom Tennis Center. The victory was the first in program history for the Mavericks.
Omaha improved to 3-8 overall on the season, while the loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-6.
The Mavericks came out energized to start Friday's match, taking quick leads in all three courts in doubles play. Omaha's freshman pairing of
Ethan Henry and
Hugo Piles Ballester struck first, downing Creighton's Armando Gandini and Joe Hoff, 6-3 at No. 2. UNO came close to clinching at No. 1, but CU's Mac Mease and Stratton Brown rallied to defeat
Nathan Reekie and
Davis Lawley 6-4.
Abdoul Ouattara and
Matt Dunn took down Nick Campbell and Daniel Lopez-Rey 6-4 at No. 2 to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Creighton quickly pulled even in singles play, as Mac Mease dealt
Ethan Henry a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at No. 6. The Mavericks got back on track as Piles Ballester got by Lopez-Rey 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4.
Abdoul Ouattara then claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Campbell at No. 1.
On court three, Lawley provided the clinching point with a three-set win over Gandini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Reekie came back from a set down to defeat Brown in split sets at No. 2 before the Bluejays picked up a split set win on court five.
The Mavericks return to action tomorrow, welcoming Chicago State to the Miracle Hill Tennis Center at Noon.
