ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior
Zach Jordan scored 11 seconds into overtime to give the Omaha hockey team a 4-3 win over St. Cloud State and a split of their weekend series.
The Mavericks snapped a season-high four-game losing streak and a five-game winless streak to improve to 7-7-2 overall and 2-5-1-0/0. The Huskies saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. They're now 5-7-4 overall and 3-5-0-0/0 in the conference.
On the game winner,
Nolan Sullivan outmuscled an SCSU defender for the puck, freeing it up for
Martin Sundberg to create a two-on-one. He slid the puck across the slot to Jordan who scored into an empty net for his seventh goal of the year.
The victory was well earned by the Mavericks who saw the Huskies battle back from a two-goal deficit.
Omaha wasted no time earning the first lead of the game.
Jason Smallidge fired home the rebound of a shot by
Kirby Proctor at 2:05, giving him his second goal of the season.
Just 1:21 later, Omaha doubled its lead when Sullivan hammered home a pass from Sundberg. Jordan had the other helper as the Mavericks created one of many SCSU turnovers in the period.
The Huskies answered back when Jami Krannila fired home a shot on a power play at 9:47.
The Mavericks restored the two-goal advantage late in the period when
Teemu Pulkkinen put back his own rebound at 18:40.
SCSU drew to within one late in the second. Defenseman Nick Perbix walked the puck in from the blue line and slid a backhander by a diving
Isaiah Saville at 16:21.
Saville would pick up his sixth win of the season in his last game with the Mavericks before joining the U.S. National Junior Team ahead of the IIHF World Junior preliminary camp. He made 29 saves.
David Hrenak started for the Huskies but was lifted after the first period, allowing three goals on 10 shots. Freshman Jaxon Castor, in his first collegiate appearance, was steady in stopping 16 of 17 but took the loss.
The Mavericks return home for a non-conference series against Arizona State on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21-22.
